Disc Injuries

DISC INJURIES

A large percentage of chiropractic patients seek treatment due to disc injuries. When the spine is out of alignment, it is not uncommon for the discs between each vertebra to reposition themselves as well.

The discs are composed of fibrous material. In the center of each, a gel-like substance provides cushioning for movement of the spine. It is when this gel-like substance leaks out of the disc that we identify them as herniated.

Herniated discs can show symptoms beyond simple back pain. They can come from either injury or through the natural progression of age. Farmington Road Chiropractic is experienced in the treatment of disc issues and can get you back on the road to recovery.

What Can You Expect from Disc Injury Treatments?

With discs either bulging or out of alignment, a chiropractic adjustment is the only natural way to get your back working right again. The centerpiece of the treatment of disc issues is the spinal adjustment. Dr. Olshové will gently use adjustment techniques to guide both vertebrae and discs back into place.

The treatment will be gradual so that there is no further damage to the area of the spine that is being treated. This treatment is noninvasive allowing for a smoother recovery from the condition. In addition to spinal adjustment, you may be given stretches, massage, physical therapy, and hot/cold therapy to help you recover more completely.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • If a bulging or herniated disc goes without treatment, it can apply pressure to nerves in your spinal cord. It can cause disruption to the signals that go through your neural network, and while rare, ultimately it can be a fatal situation.

  • No. You should always seek treatment for a herniated disc. There is a possibility that you could suffer permanent nerve damage. Without proper treatment, your symptoms can become worse and, as mentioned above, even be fatal.

  • If you suspect you have a herniated disc, it is in your best interest for your condition to be verified through an MRI or CT scan. Plain film x-rays will not clearly show this condition.
